Music in the Streets

No matter where you go in the world, when you travel into a metropolitan area you will probably find a street musician to serenade you with a song for your day. Most are working for tips or a chance to sell their latest CD. A small tip of paper money will surely get you a smile or a wink of "Thanks!". A face, interesting clothes, a musical instrument and a bustling city street create one of those great natural studios!

An Evening with the North Mississipi Allstars

The Neighborhood Theatre http://www.neighborhoodtheatre.com/ located in the funky arts district of NODA http://www.noda.org/ of Charlotte, NC http://charmeck.org/Pages/default.aspx continues to impress with great music acts at some of the most reasonable ticket prices around. I went to see the North Mississipi Allstars http://www.nmallstars.com/  put on one of their fun jamming shows and they proceeded to blow away the audience.

The band is composed of brothers Luther Dickson on guitar, Cody Dickson playing drums and bassist Chris Chew. The trio have been playing their rootsey blues themed music together since 1996. All three of the musicians have had side projects since forming the North Mississipi Allstars. Most notably, Luther has been playing lead guitar for the Black Crowes while Cody and Chris are part of the Hill Country Revue. Luther and Cody are sons of the late legendary Memphis music producer Jim Dickinson. Jim Dickson introduced his sons to the sounds of country blues at a young age and the Memphis blues influence is present in many of their songs. The band's most recent album, Keys to the Kingdom http://www.amazon.com/Keys-Kingdom-North-Mississippi-Allstars/dp/B004GX18OO is a tribute to Jim Dickson.

Kryptonite and Concert Photography, Charlotte, NC

I have so much fun when I'm able to combine two things I truly enjoy, music and photography. Concert photography is especially fun when the band is engaging the audience and striking a pose for my Canon 7D. And that's what was going on when I went down to the Visulite Theatre http://www.visulite.com/ and photographed The Spin Doctors http://www.spindoctors.com/about. You may remember the Spin Doctors from their 1991 album, "Pocket Full of Kryptonite" http://www.amazon.com/Pocket-Full-Kryptonite-20th-Anniversary/dp/B005694Z6U/ref=sr_1_2?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1323813431&sr=1-2. Considered an original "Jam Band", The Spin Doctors emerged from the New York music scene in the early 1990's. The Spin Doctors are now out touring again promoting their 20th anniversary release of "Pocket Full of Kryptonite".

I photographed the band as they jammed through the entire Pocket Full of Kryptonite album along with several other hit songs. The audience was a rocking mix of all ages having a great time singing and dancing as the band played their tight sets.

Hope you enjoy the photos as much as I enjoyed taking them!

Concert Photography; Robert Randolph plays The Neighborhood Theatre

I really enjoy photographing musical artists. I love it when I get home and see I caught the magical energy of the musician. There are several venues in Charlotte that are alot of fun to watch live music. One of my favorite places to see a show is the Neighborhood Theatre ( http://www.neighborhoodtheatre.com/ ), located in the funky NODA district ( http://www.noda.org/ ). When Robert Randolph and the Family Band (http://www.robertrandolph.net/ ) played the Neighborhood Theatre, I grabbed the Canon 7D and got up close and personal with the band.

When photographing a concert at a place like the Neighborhood Theatre, you open the camera bag and grab the fast glass. I crank up the ISO on the 7D and open up the lens aperture. No flash photography here! When I process the photos, the noise reduction feature in the Lightroom 3 software gets a full blown workout. You gotta love the magic of digital photography!

Robert Randolph is a great guitar player, playing a pedal steel and electric guitar. Robert and the Family Band really brought it to the crowd with their bluesy rock jam playing. They also have alot of fun performing. It's always a good show when the crowd is up and dancing and Robert made sure his fans were enjoying themselves!
