I met Wilbur while driving on the Blue Ridge Parkway some where in North Carolina. I'm not sure Wilbur is his name but when I called him Wilbur he came right over to me and wanted some lovin'!

Season of Colors

Autumn in full display along the Blue Ridge Parkway is an overdose of colors and natural beauty. To be able to enjoy this great country's park lands and open wilderness is one of life's simple pleasures. Please enjoy the colors and join me in a continued commitment to protect Mother Earth and our National Parks.

Blue Ridge Life

When planning the Blue Ridge Parkway in the 1930's, the idea was to maintain a rustic pioneer look. Today, as you travel along the Blue Ridge Parkway you find beautifully preserved cabins and farms that let you understand life as it once was in the mountains of Virginia and North Carolina.

With the sun shining and the autumn leaves filled with color, it was a great day to photograph these historic sites.

The Mabry Mill was constructed in 1903 and is one of the most popular attractions on the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Puckett's Cabin was home to the famous mid wife, Orlene Puckett (1844-1939) and her husband John. Travelling through the Virginia country side, "Aunt Orlene" lived to 102 and helped deliver over 1000 babies. Most amazing, Orlene was unable to have a child of her own. Orlene gave birth to 24 infants and none survived. Yet the + 1000 births she assisted, all survived!

Built around 1880, Brinegar Cabin was home to Martin and Carolyn Brinegar. Inside the cabin is Carolyn's original loom that she used to make clothes for her family.

The Jesse Brown Cabin was built around 1840 and was home to several families for close to 90 years. In 1905 the cabin was relocated to this small valley near Tomkin's Knob.

Craggy Dome

Living in North Carolina has a natural advantage that I truly enjoy.  Being close to the Atlantic Ocean you can enjoy the beauty and pleasures of the North and South Carolina coast with it's sandy beaches. However if a mountain hike is something that you enjoy, you can easily travel along the Blue Ridge Parkway and virtually find a new place to explore any day you visit. North Carolina makes it easy to find nature's beauty.

Craggy Dome located at mile post 364 on the Blue Ridge Parkway has over a 6100 foot elevation and is home to unique vegetation and breathtaking views of the nearby rugged "Great Craggies" mountains. Standing on the bald Craggy Dome, and surrounded by short mountain shrubbery I was treated to a bright blue Carolina sky reflected on the mountains and into the valleys. Another beautiful Blue Ridge vista to treasure!

Photographing the Autumn Colors of North Carolina

It's quickly gotten cold here in beautiful Denver, NC. So before we suddenly find ourselves into winter, I'd like to share some of this year's fall foliage photos. These photos are part of a set that I took on a beautiful October day in the Smoky Mountains http://www.visitsmokies.org/ . I don't believe there are many better places in the world to view the natural beauty of autumn colors than what you find in the mountains of North Carolina along the Blue Ridge Parkway http://www.blueridgeparkway.org/  .

On this day before the sun had risen, I drove up a mountain rim to a favorite spot of mine named Wiseman's View http://appalachiantreks.blogspot.com/2008/07/wisemans-view.html . When you look out east from Wiseman's View you can't help but become part of the great vista of sun rising up over North Carolina. It's a wonderful place to go watch the sun rise any time of the year but on this day the autumn colors made it spectacular. After I completed photographing the sun rise, I drove back down the mountain and to the Blue Ridge Parkway. I made several stops along the Parkway and captured more colors of the season.

Enjoy!

Thanks for viewing the blog and I wish everyone a great week!

Peace,

John
